How dare I tell anyone how to blog! I don’t know what I’m doing myself. The one thing I did read about was to find out how long a person’s attention span was. I thought this was important for ensuring people didn’t get bored with the articles or videos written.
The general feeling or summary seemed to be that the average level of patience was about 7-8 minutes. That could be reading or watching a video. I think that resonated with me because I think I spend about that much time on an article. Any longer and I start skimming. That is now my only rule. Videos can’t exceed 8 minutes and an article can’t take longer than 8 minutes to read.
Didn’t Shakespeare say something about Brevity?
Rules in place…
I had already decided to host my own blog before realising I could have just used blogger or wordpress or tumblr and more to host it for me. Oops… I bought the domain and hosting so that was potentially not ideal. I would research that more in the future. It’s there now so it seemed that the industry leader for blogging or news self-hosted sites was WordPress. Choice made. Oh and Nublue (my web host) has a single click installer for WordPress to get my going straight away. I just needed to make it look cooler than the default after that.

I also liked WordPress because if you look around for WordPress templates to make you site look sort of sexier that the average site, there’s plenty of templates out there. Google envato or themeforest for examples. There are tons to choose from and frankly I grabbed one and didn’t do a who lot different than the out of the box answer and I think it looks pretty sweet.
It still took a weekend to figure out the template and get my own stuff online but it was easier than going from scratch or hiring somebody to do it for me. Cheaper as well.
Hopefully if you’ve gotting this far it’s taken less than 8 minutes and you are finding the design is working well for you. Leave comments if you have ideas that could make it easier.
